In the greater metropolitan area of Istanbul, under the supervision of Doctor of Microbiology, Veterinarian Fikret Memişoğlu, this study of equine-aroma- therapy on horses with behavioral issues was conducted on 4 equine-pa- tients. In veterinary medicine school, while a common veterinarian may already have heard about the merits of walking into the box of an uneasy equine-patient with lavender essential oil, it is something quite new for a lot of veterinarians to consider smell to be an effective behavioral treatment tool or a complimentary medicine that would significantly improve animal welfare during training, handling and/or lengthy uncomfortable treatments and/or chronic diseases. On the emotional/psychological level, essential oils trigger chemical re- sponses in the olfactory nerves which in turn send chemical messages to horse's limbic system, where the animal's behavioral responses are gen- erated to emotional stimuli establishing a sense of calm, stimulation, con- tentment or a number of other responses. ![]() On the physical level especially in the cases of musculoskeletal, skin and respiratory system diseases, the veterinarian community is already ac- customed to seeing/working with essential oils (eucalyptus (eucalyptus globulus), rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis), peppermint (mentha piperita), tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia) etc.) for treatment as the most common equine-veterinary drugs already contain various botanical essentials as ac- tive ingredients. Horses in particular are very sensitive animals and have been shown to benefit from aromatherapy. Very much like the human organism, aromatherapy works with animals on a number of different levels physically, emotionally, conditionally and ev- olutionarily. With aromatherapy gain- ing ground in human medicine every day, the subject also started to attract interest from the veterinarian community especially in Western European countries - which in turn led to an increasing number of scientific research in the field. Aromatherapy can be summarized as the use of essential oils for the pro- tection, wellness and treatment of human health.
